Shad spawn is going on now and it is fire the first couple of hours in the morning. My favorite lure this time of year is definitely the swim jig paired with a rage craw. White is the color of choice but any shad color will work. Throw it around the grass on main lake points and any other places the shad are spawning (docks, rocks, etc).

Fish are in all stages of the spawn. We were targeting post spawn fish that had already moved out to the ledges. Used the Aqua Vu to find schools with bigger fish in them. Lots of fish to be caught up shallow with a wacky worm, most were in the 2-3lb range though. We ended up sitting on one school all day and weighed in 21lbs 3oz which put us in 6th place out of 250 boats.

On my practice day my buddy and I caught a bunch of fish on the One Knocker but the day of the BFL the would not touch my lipless. My co-angler caught 14.75 lbs on a small swim bait and super light jig head. I caught this one and it came off of the A-rig. They wouldn’t have a spinnerbait for anything. They only ate the A-rig and small swim baits.

I found a ton of bait fish in the middle of creek pockets and I tried throwing a-rigs, swim baits, minnow style baits, but they liked the one knocker the best!

Water levels are still low and this seems to be affecting spawn. Starting to see lots of small fish in shallower waters.

The Duckett Baits Shad Swimbaits are my go to bait when wanting to imitate various shad and baitfish species commonly found in fisheries throughout the United States. These triple-jointed swimbaits possess intricate details that enhance their ability to attract larger fish. With the spawn on I like to slide out a little and throw these around for the bigger bites.

Most bites came from shakey head but the better quality fish came from spinner bait and trap; fished bank ledges and points. Best results came when you could feel gravel/rocks on bottom.

Friday, March 29th, I went out and drove around looking at water clarity and if the lake was up or not. I checked for some bedding bass and found some, and they bit a Vigilante without many casts. I never set the hook. I just wanted to see the size as a backup up to our main area. And the water looks right from a couple weeks ago, so the bite should be on in the main area. Saturday, March 30th, we have the Army Aviation Association of America tournament. Boomer caught one on a brushhog at our first stop, but boats filled that creek up fast. We moved to our main area and started throwing chatterbaits. We were catching bucks at first and then I caught a 5.75 and then a 5.5. We caught another 3 lber and them the bite got slow with the wind picking up and TVA cut the current. Filled out limit with a 2 lber. Fished with people coming into our area but they would put their boats over the area the bites came from and not fish it right. We won the tournament and big fish with 18.3 lbs. Chatterbait Evo with a Scottsboro Tackle Sniper Pro continues to be the bite and big bite getter on an Ark Tharp B-Hittay and 14lb Shimano Mastiff FC.
