I went fishing on the river to have some fun and catch some cold, clear water bass. I also wanted to test the Shimano Mastiff in a smaller diamter. This line has been great so far. It's very smooth and slick, being a fluorocarbon line. One thing I noticed is that it has a little bit of give which doesn't affect sensitivity or hook setting power, but works as a cushion for rough impacts. Some fluorocarbons tend to deform and become weaker with time. But lines like Shimano Mastiff seem to combat this by having just a touch of flexibility which also improves line handling and casting compared to stiffer premium lines. The river was around 7.85' and dropping, and the water temperature was 58F. It was overcast with some sprinkling rain here and there. I caught a few fish by casting against exposed tree roots and rocks using a senko rig with Zappu weighted hooks. This setup has become my go-to for a more finesse approach.

I recently participated in a semi-informal kayak tournament at Greers. I had a successful fishing trip where I caught over 10 fish by casting a 3/4 spinner bait up against rock walls. The water temperature during the trip was between 62-64F, and it was overcast with 30mph gusts. In a previous report, I mentioned that the Falcon Head Turner rod is the best option for spinnerbaits, and I still stand by that statement. I paired it with a Shimano 150 size reel with the MGL spool in a slower ratio, allowing me to channel my inner Jason Christie. The Mastiff line is an excellent choice in line if you're looking for a complete package for 3/8 and 1/2 spinnerbaits with trailers, or 3/4 ounce spinner baits without trailers. Overall, I couldn't ask for a better setup for my fishing trip.

Lot of options to catch fish this time of year. Caught fish as deep as 150 feet on jig and minnow and as shallow as 3 feet on a crank. The most fun bite for me was running secondary windy points. Start with the crankbait to cover water and slow down with the ned and swimbait to really milk the school

Cold front had pushed fish off the bank to closest weedline and secondary points. The a rig worked well on the edge of grass lines and the c rig picked up extra fish on secondary points near spawning pockets.

This kayak tournament was tough for me due to only catching 3 fish the whole day and only submitting 2 of the 3. One of which jumped off the board. All but one came off flipping a Missile baits D Bomb in Black Red flake and Brusier flash. I had to fish around the entire cypress tree to get the few bites I got through out the day. A must is the new Shimano Mastiff FC. I was using 18lb test and it was doing wonders with the abrasion resistance and low stretch allowed me to fish the heaviest cover without going to braid. Hope this helps out for your next trip.

Fish were just starting to spawn and the rest of them were getting ready to spawn. Caught this 5 pound largemouth in a short pocket off the main river. Big chunk rock seemed to be the key for the largemouth.

This lake was our second stop for our tournament season. In between cypress trees and the bank and working a weighted wacky worm, or burning a mini max is what got my bites.

Went to catch a Solar Eclipse fish and caught a 5.08 on the backside of the total Eclipse how cool was that. It’ll be one of those things I’ll never forget. It was really neat during the Total Eclipse the bait fish started swirling on the top of the water everywhere and than bass started schooling on them.

Day after cold front, sunny side docks seemed to be holding fish and found a few near lay downs and brush piles. Fish hugging the bottom. Slow retrieve produced soft bite, pay attention on the early bait movements.

Finished our first Yak event of the year in 2nd by doing a few things caught a few throwing a wiggle wart up super shallow, caught two bigger fish on a swimbait and culled out all my smallest fish with a jig. They’re starting to pull up shallow and getting ready to spawn so get in as much fishing in as you can.
